Some of you have had to jump feet first into teaching STAAR standards. Others won't have students taking STAAR for another year or two. Still others of you teach elective or non-core classes and won't have students taking STAAR in your subject at all. It's true that we may all be at different places with this change, but we are all affected in some way.
Those of you who teach multiple grade levels may have ninth graders who are taking STAAR this year. For those of you who do not have ninth graders, this is a great opportunity for you to begin looking forward and implementing these standards in your classroom before your students are having to test. Elective teachers, especially CTE teachers, are being required more and more to show that you are teaching these standards in non-academic areas.
For this week's cohort meeting, I want you to take a look at the STAAR standards. Think about how you can begin to implement these in your classrooms. How do they naturally fit into what you are already doing? What information or materials do you need to help you? Be prepared to discuss standards that you can implement. Core teachers, be prepared to tell the group what standards you need help emphasizing.
